The British press are calling Michelle Obama “Mighty Michelle” and the “new Jacqueline Kennedy” but they’re also calling her out for putting her arm around the queen, a move few would ever consider.
“Protocol seems to be dispensed with when The Obama’s come to town,” said the Times of London, which noted that the queen seemed particularly comfortable with the first lady and “put her hand on the back of Mrs. Obama, who did the same for a few moments.”
The royal family isn’t exactly touchy-feely but an official statement from Buckingham Palace said Michelle’s gesture was not a big deal. “There is no offense. The reception was an informal occasion. There’s no breach of protocol”.
The Obama’s are in Europe for the G20 Economic Summit.
